Infantino confirms 2027 re‑election bid amid growing global opposition

Gianni Infantino will run for re‑election as FIFA president in 2027, the organisation confirmed after the Women’s Under‑20 World Cup match in Poland. Although Infantino initially declined to address the topic when questioned before kick‑off, FIFA later reiterated that his April announcement still stands. As of now, he is expected to run unopposed, though UEFA, AFC and CONCACAF are considering presenting rival candidates before the November 18 deadline, which requires support from at least five member associations.

Infantino’s bid comes during a period of intense scrutiny following the FIFA Forward Enterprise scandal, which prompted several confederations to withdraw their backing. The Dutch FA announced it will host a global summit on FIFA’s future, pointedly excluding Infantino and calling for new leadership and structural reform. Infantino, who succeeded Sepp Blatter in 2016, will seek another term at the 77th FIFA Congress in Rabat in April 2027.
