Morocco dealt World Cup blow as Abde and Aguerd ruled out through injury

Morocco have suffered two major setbacks just hours before the start of the 2026 World Cup, with Ez Abde and Nayef Aguerd both ruled out through injury and replaced by Mohamed Sbai and Marwane Saadane. Abde’s absence is considered the bigger blow, as the Real Betis winger arrived in outstanding form and was expected to play a central role in Morocco’s campaign after their historic semi‑final run four years ago. His tournament ended abruptly following a freak collision with teammate Chadi Riad during the friendly against Norway, resulting in a knee sprain deemed too severe for him to continue.

Aguerd, meanwhile, had been included in the initial squad despite carrying an injury, but medical staff ultimately determined he would not recover in time to feature for coach Mohamed Ouahbi. As a result, Angers midfielder Sbai replaces Abde, while Al‑Fateh defender Saadane steps in for Aguerd.
